The Finnish Disco Playlist

Everything sounds better in Finnish, especially Disco.

In the area were I grew up we had a lot of Finnish people so I grew up with the language. Never understood a thing which led to a little frustration and I thought Finnish sounded harsh.

Wise by age I re-evaluated that during a course in poetry that I took. The teacher had had one of her poems translated to Finnish and she marveled at how much more expressive Finnish sounded than Swedish.

I am not sure if that is true. We are always a bit blind to how our own language sounds, aren’t we?
But, the incident with the teacher made me listen to Finnish in a brand new way anyway. It still does sound harsher than my own language, but now I like it. I also hear this melancholy in the language, which I have a soft spot for.

These things, combined with the jolly and carefree rhythms of Disco, is what makes the Finnish Disco especially successful.

I couldn’t have a post about Finnish Disco without this classic Youtube clip.

As it turns out the well of Finnish Disco runs deep. There are so many good songs and for some reason they translated almost every disco hit into Finnish.
They also made a few disco bangers of their own.

One of the theories behind Discos’ success in Finland steams from the populations long love of Tango. People in Finland love to dance. Therefor Åke in the clip above also had his own space on TV. Keeping the tradition up.

A few years ago I started collecting theses songs in to this playlist and it has brought me plenty of joy since.
