The Crips Like Winter Playlist

I remember when I studied radio broadcasting and our teacher had us all listen to different music and then imagine what the music looked like. We had our eyes closed and among other songs we listened to Vivaldi’s ”Spring”. Low hanging fruit perhaps. But my teacher had a point. Music is more than just notes. It has ambience and can sound like a day in Spring, a rainy afternoon i the city, or a brisk winter day.

I wanted to make a winter playlist, without the obvious Christmas themes. So how can you hear Winter in music?

I’m guessing the answer is fairly individual, based on experiences. Had I grown up in Africa I imagine my references might be different from those I have, growing up in northern Europe.

I know that when the snow comes, it muffles the sounds. The world becomes a bit more quiet. I also think about the sound of walking in snow. That crispy noice your shoes makes. It’s like the sounds one does hear are clearer than usual.

Theres also that sense of nature somehow sleeping, as the trees loose all their leafs. And at the same time, theres such beauty in the winter landscape. It’s dark, melancholic and pretty.

I think Faroese Eivør Pálsdóttirs song illustrates the feeling pretty well. Nevermind that the performance was recorded during summer. Just close your eyes and enjoy:

To my nordic ears I would translate the title to ”Spellbound”. In nordic languages the word also has a touch of folklore in it. Trolls (or such creatures) used to capture people, luring them and thereby making them Trollbundna.

The song is of course included in my playlist. Along with Vivaldis interpretation on Winter, just to honor my old teacher.

I am also very interested in your thoughts. Which songs do you think sound like winter? Leave a comment and let me know!
