How High The Moon?

To answer the question ”how high the moon” we could do a little experiment…

This post is inspired by the classic jazz standard ”How High the Moon”. Here performed by Les Paul. Have a listen while I continue to answer the question further down:

Experiment

Take a basketball, a tennis ball ans some measuring tape.

If Earth was the size of a basketball, the moon would be the size of a tennis ball. That’s to give you an idea of how they compare.
Place the basketball on the ground. Use the measuring tape to find a spot 7,3 meters or 23 feet 9 inches away from the middle of the basketball. Place the tennis ball there. The tennis ball is the moon.

The distance of the moon varies, but it’s around 384 400 km or 238855 miles away. Also, the first trip to the moon (unmanned), back in 1959, is still the fastest one. It took 36 hours and had an average speed of 10,500 km/hr.

So, quite high the moon. 😀
